October 20, 2008

I, for one, have been hesitant to take on projects shot with the XDCam. I was unfamiliar with the format and was uncomfortable with using third-party transfer software. But thanks to Tim O’Grady, I saw firsthand his workflow – and it’s relatively effortless. The most difficult part of the process seems to be downloading the free software from Sony as well as the Device Driver.

For our meeting Tim brought in a Sony EX-1 XDCam and HD monitor, supplied by Wolf Creek Productions, and staged a table-top shoot. He then directly imported the XDCam files by attaching his EX1 camera (with the memory card still in it) to the computer via a USB cable. We saw the footage through the Sony software where one could choose which clips to keep. He then opened FCP and selected the XDCam transfer menu and edited a sample sequence for us. All in all, nothing to be squeamish about!

Until next meeting…

October Meeting

Friday, October 17th, 2008

This Mondays meeting will feature a show and tell with the camera de jour, the Sony EX-1 XDCam. We’ll go through its features and tapeless work flow, step by step, and see why this little camera is becoming increasingly popular with videographers and filmmakers. The demonstration will be conducted by Tim O’Grady, who has used the EX-1 many times, and although he wasn’t sure what he was doing half the time he still managed to make pretty pictures. So be sure to stop by and take a look at one of the best little cameras around.
See you there.
